SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
For almost a thousand years, Alpine civilisation developed in a balanced equilibrium between nature and culture. Man drew resources from the environment without ever going beyond the limits of the resources themselves. With 19th- and 20th-century industrialisation, and with the advent of the tourist industry, the old equilibrium has been broken in favour of greater exchanges and new productions, but the environment continues to remain the primary source of the mountain, and must be preserved by every means possible.
The new alliance
After the First World War, a need to safeguard the Alps from the indiscriminate action of man began to be felt. The Gran Paradiso and other Alpine and Apennine parks became laboratories of balanced activities in which the action of man did not impair the riches of the environment. During the last decades of the 20th century, people began to talk about “sustainable development”, the only way for guaranteeing a future for the Alpine chain, for its inhabitants and for the tourists who come looking for something different from the city.
